International Course on Sustainable Approaches to Community Health

"Responding to the Challenges of Community Health"

23 August to 10 September, 2004
Y.C. James Yen Center, Biga, Silang, Cavite, Philippines

Health, especially of the poor, needs to be protected, promoted and improved (DAC Guidelines and Reference Series). Initiatives at the global, as well as national and community levels, of development organizations: government and non-government / private, have been implemented to facilitate provision of basic health services. Though current health data indicators reflect  some improvements, achievement of the vision "Health for All" is still a challenge. Health is multi-faceted. It cannot be addressed in isolation with other issues like poverty, food insecurity, environment degradation, gender inequality, etc.

Addressing health issues calls for integrated approaches that promote people's participation in the management of their own health. Responding to the challenges of community health is a function of peoples' abilities to carry out tasks and responsibilities to manage health related issues and eventually access the resources they need to implement and sustain health interventions.

As a development practitioner engaged in provision of health services or facilitating development processes towards healthy communities, how can you plan, implement, monitor and evaluate
health activities better? How do other organizations cope with the challenges of Community Health? What are the realities of people's participation in improved community health?

We are inviting development workers who have a minimum of two years experience in community health; those who work in NGOs, government organizations, private sector, academe, research institutions or donor agencies, who would like to experience and understand need-based efforts, supportive of community health initiatives.

This is a three-week training course, involving learning activities highlighting both theoretical and field experiences. The first week focuses on understanding health situation (situation analysis) and concepts related to people's participation in managing community health. This involves a health assessment of se-
lected communities using Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools. The second week focuses on different models, strategies/approaches being used by health organizations. This is done through visits involving orientation to different health programs, projects and activities, as well as interaction with rural communities. During the third week, participants prepare action plans that their organizations can pursue to promote integration and people's participation in managing community health program, projects and activities.

The course will be held on August 23 to September 10, 2004 at the Y.C. James Yen Center, Biga, Silang, Cavite, Philippines. The fee is US$ 2,500, which will cover the training cost, course-related local travels, materials, meals and lodging for the duration of the course. It does not include international
airfare or out-of-pocket allowances and laundry, and other incidental expenses.

Be part of this exciting and valuable learning experience!
