    NEWS FROM CED: SEPTEMBER 2006

    SCHOLARSHIP TO MEDIA STUDENTS
    ---------------------------------------------------------

Malegaon is considered a Muslim dominated town, which has had a history of communal violence as well as attempts to counter it. The recent blast seems to be aimed at creating a communal divide.

Deadlines and Sensationalism no doubt force the pen and lens of mass media in certain directions. Students of Mass media, particularly journalists, however would find it very instructive and educative to investigate and query the various factors involved, at a leisurely pace.

In view of this, CED in association with Insaaniyat has decided to extend the CED-Insaaniyat Scholarship to Mass media students, to enable them to go to Malegaon, as well as do some background study at CED. The student is expected to write an original essay of not less than 2500 words, which is to be submitted by 25 October 2006.

For more information on the scholarship and an application form please write to Jacintha(jacintha@doccentre.net)

'Net-working' together talks about these and many more issues.

The film is accompanied by a Companion Volume consisting of script of the film, expert interviews and analytical articles and a backgrounder '
FISHING IN TROUBLED WATERS: Increased Fragility of an already precarious livelihood' which has been developed around the adaptation of an interview of Dr.John Kurien, Professor, CDS, Trivandrum.  It portrays the post-tsunami issues and concerns of the fishing communities like insecure livelihood, safety on land, alternative employment, significance of co-operatives etc.,.
