Centre for Education and Documentation: Newsletter Oct 04 FINAL SOLUTION: A FILM by Rakesh Sharma, Cleared by Censor Board !

On the 2nd of October, Gandhi Jayanti, CED - Mumbai, organised a filmscreening of Final Solution, the much awaited documentary on the Gujarat riots. This was a part of the effort to urge the Government of India to revoke the ban imposed by the Censor Board on the film.

Private screenings like ours were held across Mumbai and the viewers were asked to sign a petition which was sent to the Minister of Information and broadcasting. Our efforts definitely bore fruit and a few days later, the film was cleared by the censor board, without any cuts.

    Synopsis of the film:

Final Solution, directed by Rakesh Sharma, is a study of the politics of hate.
Set in Gujarat during the period Feb/March 2002 - July 2003, the film graphically
documents the changing face of right-wing politics in India through a study of
genocidal violence against Moslems in Gujarat.

Priced @ Rs. 300/- for individuals and Rs.500/- for Organisations, those who are interested in purchasing a copy, do drop by or call Jacintha at 022-22020019 or Saraswathi at 080-25353397

Film Screening of 'SOLDIERS in SARONG' On November 4th at 4:15pm

The film is directed by Prof. Lokendra Arambam, a theatre person from Imphal, Manipur, commissioned by NEN (North-East Network) in 2003.

The film depicts Violence Against Women and how Meira Paibis (women torch bearers)
have been fighting alcoholism, drug abuse and violence against women in their society.
Over the years, with increased militarisation in the state of Manipur,
these women also had to devise ways to fight and resist atrocities committed by the armed forces.
The film makes a special reference to Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1956
    and the efforts of women
in the state to fight excesses committed under Act in Manipur.

Duration of the film is 43 min. The film is followed by a discussion.
