COMMUNALISM
Shiv Sena’s fascism is now at a phase similar to that of Hitler in the mid-1930s. It is quite possible that the next target of the creeping fascist forces could be the Gujarati community which is much wealthier and owns most of the businesses and trade in Mumbai. They are, till now, indifferent to the fate of the victims of Shiv Sena. Thomas, T., " A Case of Creeping Fascism", Business Standard, Mumbai, 06 September

INITIATIVES FOR COMMUNAL HARMONY

Politicians and religious leaders have been quoted extremely on the recent communal impasse. But what about the youth, who are in many ways most affected by the issue? What do they think? Do they have any solution to the Ayodhya dispute? Are they even interested? Bombay Times commissioned ORG-Marg to survey Mumbai youths to find out what they think.
"City Youth Gives Thumbs Down To Communalism", The Times of India, Mumbai,15 March 2002, [C.L53b], /eldoc/urban_issues/uu1_M056.html

How do we repair Hindu-Muslim relations, which have reached the nadir, especial after the recent happenings? I have tried in my humble way, through my speeches and writings, to impress upon my co-religionists to give up their confrontationist attitude towards Hindus whatever the provocation and try to arrive at a consensus with them on controversial issues...

ENOUGH has been said about the Ayodhya episode — its legal status and its law and order  dimensions. We have also seen how the larger political community tends to escape its responsibility,  refuses to negotiate with real cultural-civilisational issues, and reduces the Supreme Court to a  scapegoat.

RIOTS AND COMMUNAL HISTORY OF MUMBAI

Bombay has achieved the dubious distinction of setting an all India record of communal madness under the leadership of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra who has lost will to govern and has yet strong will to continue in the set of power. Whole Bombay is burning when these lines are being written. The city has begun to limp back to normalcy after the riots of 6-12 December which erupted after the demolition of Babari Masjid.
Asghar Ali Engineer, "Bombay Shames India"- Paper on Communal Riots,Institute of Islamic Studies, Mumbai. February, 1993, [C. L53a],  /eldoc/urban_issues/uu1_M052.html

The 1993 communal riots of Mumbai, in which over 1,000 people were killed, have had far-reaching effects, including changes in the spatial concentration of the city, the attitude of Muslims  towards the government and the political parties, and the way the residents perceive their city.
