Kashmir and common sense

Author: Vijay Dhar
Volumes have been written and for many hundred hours, people have spoken on KASHMIR. I remember when I was in school, Mr. Krishna Menon, the then Defense Minister of India, spoke about Kashmir for nine hours and twenty minutes at the United Nations which still is a record. Earlier it was Sir Zafarullah, who represented Pakistan and my father, Late Mr. D. P. Dhar, who was a part of the Indian delegation. When my father spoke, Sir Zafarullah made one comment towards my father, “My dear young man, please remember common sense is not very common.” I am talking of the year, 1951, when the tall and gallant Kashmiri leader, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, was heading the Indian delegation to the United Nation.

Don’t write off populists just yet

THIS year has not been nearly as kind to populists as 2016 was. Marine Le Pen lost the run-off in the French presidential election by a fat margin, and support for the UK Independence Party, a Eurosceptic outfit, is expected to collapse in Britain?s upcoming general election. Donald Trump?s presidency also looks increasingly shaky, as a series of scandals has driven his approval rating below 40%.

Naxalbari@50: Did the Maoist revolution achieve anything?

50 years ago, a group of peasants rose in revolt against the oppression of landlords and back-breaking levies in the small north Bengal village of Naxalbari. The embers of this uprising spread across several states but quickly turned violent as hundreds of people were killed and the streets of Kolkata resembled a war zone. But today, the town has forgotten the revolution and the Left displaced by the RSS that has expanded. Also forgotten is how women shaped and led the movement. Half a century later, HT travels back to where it all began to find out if the Naxals achieved anything

Does Yogendra Yadav consider Kejriwal and AAP to be a bigger ideological foe than Modi and the BJP?

Author: Ajaz Ashraf
For a party that places special emphasis on transparency in public life, it is surprising that Swaraj India has not placed on its website the votes each of its candidates polled in last month’s municipal elections in Delhi. Such a display of results will give the people an opportunity to judge what chance Swaraj India has of achieving its mission, whether it can even survive the birth pangs typical of any incipient organisation.

I am not against one nation in particular, but against the general idea of all nations.’

Author: Rabindranath Tagore
In finding the solution of our problem we shall have helped to solve the world problem as well. What India has been, the whole world is now. The whole world is becoming one country through scientific facility. And the moment is arriving when you also must find a basis of unity which is not political. If India can offer to the world her solution, it will be a contribution to humanity. There is only one history - the history of man. All national histories are merely chapters in the larger one. And we are content in India to suffer for such a great cause

Uranium Exploration In Meghalaya’s Villages Continues Unabated Without Local Sanction And Despite Troubling Health And Environmental Concern

Author: DILNAZ BOGA
In 1976, the AMD set up its northeastern-circle office in Shillong. Since then, Meghalaya has been at the centre of India’s quest for uranium, and exploration via drilling—a pre-mining activity—has been conducted in various villages in the state. According to the AMD’s website, by 1992, it had completed exploration drilling and geological studies of the Domiasiat uranium deposit, also known as the Kyelleng-Pyndengsohiong-Mawtahbah deposit, or KPM. The website records that 9,500 tonnes of uranium ore is estimated to exist at the Domiasiat site.

Stop the Attack on Minorities and Dalits in the name of Gau RakshaBackup Copy in CED Library

Author: National Alliance of People’s Movements
The terror of Gau Goondas is rampant all over the country. The state have been unable to crackdown on the the Gau Rakshak who have been cowardly spearheading the attack on minorities and dalits in different ways. One month has passed after the death of Pehlu Khan where we only witnessed the arrogance of the state who have failed to meet the families of victims or crackdown on the culprits in the case. Rather the politicians and the state have justified the attack by shielding the act and Gau Rakshaks in many ways.

Kejriwal a dangerous idea: No establishment will let him survive

Blundering along, dangerously

The Aadhaar project’s headlong push towards “total” enrolment of Indian citizens threatens the privacy of individuals on an unprecedented scale, while its patchy biometric system acts as a tool of denial for the most vulnerable. Hindutva can be a racist and neocolonial force, but not Hinduism

Author: Rajiv Desai
Just to get the main thesis of this article sorted out: the Hindutva advocated by the BJP government and its ecosystems is most definitely not Hinduism. It is a network of cults that may be embarked on a 21st century attempt to colonise India. Here’s how: Hindutva is a set of beliefs and practices that can be traced to illiberal formations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its various avatars and offshoots.

Supreme Court Holds Adani Power to Obligations of Power Purchase Agreement

Author: ABHIK CHIMNI
In 2010, the Government of Indonesia issued new guidelines aligning the export price of coal from Indonesia with the prevalent international market prices. Thereby, making the export price of coal considerably higher than seen in the previous four decades. Earlier in 2007, when Adani Power had bid aggressively to supply power to Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) and Haryana utilities they had not taken into consideration such a possibility. This decision by the Indonesian Government turned out to be a financial calamity for Adani Power, that had on the premise of cheaper coal from Indonesia bid successfully and entered into a long-term Power Purchase Agreements for supplying power to GUVNL and Haryana utilities .

SWARAJ as JOURNEY -Convocation Address- Development Management Institute ConvocationBackup Copy in CED Library

Author: Rajni Bakshi
So let us look at three questions that most young people can relate to: • Are your dreams, your aspirations, really your own or are you flying on auto-pilot? That is, are you pursuing dreams that are truly of your own making or just following the crowd? • Are you planning to struggle for ‘opportunities’ within the existing game or are you inspired to create new possibilities? That is, forge new paths which stretch the limits of what is today considered ‘doable’. • Do you feel strong enough to speak truth to power – be it government or other forms of power? And if you do, then how is this to be done?

One of India’s most famous authors — and one of its fiercest critics — Roy is out with a new book, "Capitalism: A Ghost Story," which dives into India’s transforming political landscape and makes the case that globalized capitalism has intensified the wealth divide, racism, and environmental degradation.
